A Japanese frontier research group (*) coordinated succeeded to develop the world's most powerful 365-kW high-temperature superconducting (HTS) motor. Recently, the load test of this motor was completed at a testing facility of Fuji Electric Systems Co., Ltd.
The research group had completed the world's first practical-level liquid-nitrogen cooled HTS motor using DI-BSCCO in 2005. Then the group had worked on to improve motor capacity and developed a practically applicable 365-kW HTS motor. The world’s first superconducting propulsion unit for directly driving a contra-rotating propeller is presently being constructed by connecting the newly developed 365-kW HTS motor in tandem with a 50-kW HTS motor developed last year.

Because of the remarkable features of this new concept HTS motor, it is expected that a 400-kW-class HTS marine electrical propulsion system will be introduced to the market within a few years and that a 2500-kW motor will be developed in the more distant future.
